Paul B. Butler Jr.


Paul B. Butler, Jr. is the founder of Butler Pappas and is currently Of Counsel to the firm. Mr. Butler's practice has been concentrated in the fields of first and third party insurance coverage, bad faith and punitive damage claims. He received his Bachelor of Arts (1969), Master of Divinity, cum laude (1972), and Doctor of Jurisprudence, with distinction (1976), from Emory University and is admitted to practice in both Florida and Georgia. Mr. Butler's training in dispute resolution includes the Harvard University PIL Course in Mediation and the Florida Supreme Court mediator certification course at the University of South Florida. Mr. Butler is certified as a mediator by the Florida Supreme Court.

Mr. Butler is a member of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel. He served as Dean of the FDCC's Litigation Management College. Mr. Butler served on the Board of Directors of the Defense Research Institute, chaired DRI's Insurance Law Committee, its Amicus Curiae Committee, and served as Chair of DRI's Law Institute. Mr. Butler is a member of the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys and is a former Vice-Chair of the Property Insurance Committee of the IADC. Mr. Butler served on the Council of the ABA's Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section (TTIPS) and served in the ABA's House of Delegates. Mr. Butler has been actively involved in the field of civil justice improvement, having served on the ABA's Long Range Planning Committee on Civil Justice Improvement and chaired the TTIPS Task Force on Improvement of the Civil Justice System. He is a former Chair of the ABA/TTIPS Property Insurance Law Committee.

Mr. Butler has been a frequent lecturer and author in the field of first and third party insurance coverage matters and was named by the National Law Journal as one of the 25 outstanding insurance defense attorneys in the United States.

Mr. Butler's national leadership addressing issues of civil justice reform and the relationship between the insurance industry and defense counsel have helped Butler Pappas stay at the forefront in its pursuit of ways to become more efficient and cost effective.
